[general] What is a Community Top Level Domain?
The following are the various kinds of TLDs:
o Standard generic TLDs (e.g. .com, .club , .cloud): No particular TLD-specific policy
o Country code TLDs (e.g. .ch, .de , it, .tv): Subject to the respective country’s laws
o Brand TLDs (e.g. .ibm, .eurovision): For exclusive use by the respective registry operator
o Geographic and cultural/language TLDs (e.g. .paris, .swiss): For the respective local community, culture or language
o Community-based TLDs (e.g. .bank, .sport, .radio, .pharmacy): For the respective community
Community TLDs are intended for community groups operating their own TLD for an economic sector, a cultural community or a linguistic community. Rules and controls are defined to ensure that the TLD represents a specific community, being reserved for its use.
Only the community TLD can fully prevent cybersquatting by limiting who can obtain a domain name (policy, pre- and post-controls), and avoid schemes similar to ‘.tv’ in which many speculators buy domains simply for commercial purposes, namely for reselling them to brand owners for defensive reasons.
Few Community TLDs propositions have passed the very difficult ICANN Community Priority Evaluation Process (CPE). Many projects have been rejected due to the stringent CPE procedure. Being recognized as Community TLD is significant, since it means that genuine projects are recognized and given priority, whereas other non-community projects are eliminated. In the alternative scenario, auctions are organized and can be assigned on a purely commercial basis.
[portofolios] I represent a Sports Federation. How do I get access to the Federation's portofolio?
As a federation that is a member of GAISF, you should have received a 'Tracking Domain' from the DotSport registry.
In order to activate your domain portofolio, you must search for and create the tracking domain that was sent to you, using the phase "Sport Disciplines Tracking"
Once the tracking domain has been validated, the portofolio of domains will be created for you and you will be able to manage them via your account.
[portofolios] I represent a Sporting Goods business that is a member of WFSGI. How do I get access to the respective portofolio?
As a WFSGI member, you may have received a 'Tracking Domain' from the DotSport registry.
In order to activate your domain portofolio, you must search for and create the tracking domain that was sent to you, using the phase "Sport Disciplines Tracking"
Once the tracking domain has been validated, the portofolio of domains will be created for you and you will be able to manage them via your account.
[applications] During the launch period (Tuesday 2018-09-04 17:00 UTC to Tuesday 2018-11-06 17:00 UTC) all domain registration requests are handled as applications. What terms apply?
During the launch period, domain creation requests result in the creation of an application for that domain. This means that more than one application can be submitted for the same domain.
As a consequence of this principle, one or more open applications may exist for a domain name even if that domain shown as available in the registry.
An application can be withdrawn by issuing an application delete command.
All applications go through a validation process by registry staff.
An application may be rejected based on the applicable registration rules, on particular the eligibility and name selection rules.
If more than one application is validated for the same domain, a contention resolution process starts. Contention resolution may involve relative priority, the voluntary withdrawal of one or more contending applications, comparative evaluation or, as a mechanism of last resort, allocation by lottery or auction.
[eligibility] Will every .sport domain registered or applied-for be validated by registry staff?
All .sport registrations are subject to pre-validation. In addition to pre-validation, a post-validation process will be in place to review existing registrations. Registrants should use the free-format 'intended-use' field available in the registration request to explain their role with respect to the requested domain and how they plan to use the domain.
[eligibility] Are their special requirements for brands to be registered as .sport domain names?
A brand can be registered as a .sport domain.
It does not need to be a sport-related brand.
A .sport domain can help convey a brand's sport-sponsorship and sport-advertising related content separate from other content.
However, the existence of brand or registered trademark does not automatically imply a right to register that expression as a .sport domain.
The key criterion is that the role of the applicant or registrant must be commensurate to that of the domain name. Applications for domains reflecting sports disciplines names, geographic names or generic terms may be rejected.
[eligbility] Can any individual register a .sport domain?
Yes. In all cases, the registrant must be clearly and accurately identified in the registrant contact record.
[premium domains] Are there premium or reserved .sport domains?
A domain of critical importance to the sport community may be designated as critical by the registry at any time prior to allocation. A critical name may be subject to special terms with respect to eligibility, commitments required from the domain holder and fees.
[reserved domains] Is there a list of reserved domains?
No, there is no exhaustive list of reserved domains for sport. A domain may be designated as reserved at any time. The fact that a domain is shown as available is not guarantee that the domain is not reserved.
[syntax] Does .sport support internationalized domain name registrations?
Yes. However, IDN registrations are subject to enhanced validation from a technical and lexical standpoint to avoid any risk of confusion. All IDN variants of a domains name must be registered to the same party and have the same name servers. IDN tables for the following languages will be posted on IANA with more to follow: Latin, Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean.
[syntax] Are number domains allowed, e.g. 123456.sport?
Yes, number domains are allowed unless there is a risk of confusion or techical problems. Note that domains expressing years (such as 2018.sport) are critical in the sport context and therefore subject to corresponding eligibility and name selection criteria.
[syntax] What is the minimum and maximum length of registered .sport domains?
The minimum length of the second-level U-label is 1 character. However, single character and two-character expression are treated as critical names and thus subject to eligibility restrictions and documented enforceable commitments regarding their use. The maximum length of the second-level A-label is 63 characters.
[registration cycle] What registration periods and grace periods apply?
The registration cycle matches the standard for gTLDs. The minimum registration period is 1 year. Renewals are allowed at any time by multiples of 1 year. The maximum registration term is 10 years. The initial registration period starts at allocation. Auto-renewal takes place 45 days after expiration, that is, at the end of the Auto-Renewal Grace Period. The 5-day Add Grace Period starts at allocation.
